With the new staff laptops about to be distributed, this post provides an overview of what staff members can expect during the distribution process.
Multiple days for each staff member!
Each staff member will participate in two days of transition to her or his new laptop. (We anticipate that the Info Services team will be at each school for anywhere from two to four days per school in order to complete this process for all staff members.)
Day 1-Turn-in & Preparations
MacBook Turn-in
In the morning, prior to the start of the school day, staff members will bring their current MacBooks along with the power cord and video adapter (dongle) to the LMC. Staff members with Boardmaker CDs will turn those in at this time also. At this time, staff members will turn in their laptops and accessories. Staff members should be logged in to the MacBook prior to turning it in, and staff members should have prepared the device according to the transitional directions on The Modern Pen. Staff members do not need to delete anything from their staff laptops as these machines will be completely wiped by the Information Services team. As your MacBook is turned in, it will be recorded in the inventory database. At that time, there will be an initial review of the laptop’s condition. Additionally, at this time, staff members will also be asked to pay for missing components at the following prices: $62 for the power brick and MagSafe connector; $10 for the power cord extension; $17 for the VGA Adaptor (dongle).

At this time, you will also be assigned your new laptop. You will sign-in to the laptop using your Active Directory account, and then, you will also sign-in to Chrome with your CCSD21 Google Apps for Education account. Then, you will leave your laptop with the Information Services team for the transfer of your movie, music, and picture files as well as for completing final set-up steps in order to give you the optimal experience when you receive your laptop the next day.
Day 2-Laptop Distribution & Orientation
On the second day, staff members will return at a pre-selected time that the staff member has selected from among three options (typically, for most schools, before school, lunchtime, or after school) for an orientation session that will last for approximately 30 minutes. During this session, staff members will receive their computers, and learn basic information with regards to:
- Hardware-ports, touchscreen, trackpad
- Logging in
- Chrome and Chrome Apps
- Windows 8.1 Tips
- Resource for additional support
- PowerTeacher Gradebook
You will leave this session with your laptop and power cord.

Each District 21 school is named after an American author, and learning and literacy is at the center of our Professional Learning Community. The Modern Pen provides a collaborative location in which District 21 teachers can come together to learn the skills that will enable their students to learn new skills and to understand concepts at an even different level than before.
